In collaboration with our joint-venture partners at Bell Architects, we developed a concept to modernize this existing neighborhood elementary school. Challenges included expanding the typical classroom size while working within an existing concrete structural system, connecting floor plates at three different levels to meet ADA compliance and developing a welcoming and safe entry with an expansion at the library and main office. Concept design highlights include the development of  small reading nooks along the corridor wall of each classroom, connecting learning to nature with an outdoor classroom and reducing the building’s environmental impact with updated mechanical systems, natural ventilation and a proposed PV solar array.
